‘To take something’ is a perfectly innocent take expression but one needs to use caution every now and again because with the object pronoun ‘it’ things can change a little.
In a normal situation we might find the expression used like this:
Cyclist: “Hey! That guy just took my bike!”
The poor cyclist has just had his bicycle stolen.
An example with the object pronoun:
Sister: “Mum! Alan ate my chocolate cupcake.”
Mum: “Alan! That was your sister’s!”
Alan: “But I asked dad and he said I could take it.”
‘It’ in this example is clearly referring to a cupcake, a physical object that was moved from one place to another, in this case from the sister’s possession to the brother’s possession, and is most likely being stored in his stomach. One also expects that dad will be in trouble.
However, when we use ‘take’ with the object pronoun ‘it’ as an expression it can mean something completely different. Aldi is a German supermarket chain and the naming of the product in the meme seems to be a translation oversight. They probably wanted to imply ‘Pick me up and take me home!’, but unfortunately it could be misunderstood.
‘Take it!’ as an expression can have the same usage as above.
For example:
Carl: “Can I borrow your stapler?”
Peter: “take it!”
In this usage Carl asks to remove the stapler from Peter’s possession and use it; because he uses the word ‘borrow’, we would expect that he plans on giving it back later.
However, ‘Take it‘ with the object pronoun can also mean to resist something.
For example:
Dave: “Did you see the boxing last night? That punch was brutal!”
Mick: “It sure was! I can’t believe he took it, I was sure that would have knocked him out”
Here the ‘it’ refers to the punch, and the opposing boxer was able to resist ‘it’.
An example in negative:
Jay: “Don’t plug the kettle and the microwave in at the same time, the generator can’t take it.”
Here the generator is unable to cope with the combined energy consumption of the kettle and the microwave.
And then there is our meme; it’s written in first person so you will have to imagine that you are a lady. ‘Off brand‘ is the shops own brand, and ‘good time‘ means to enjoy yourself. The joke is that she is challenged to ‘take four fingers’. This is an adult joke and one needs to use their imagination.
