‘To call it a day’ is an expression we use frequently to express that we are going to stop doing an activity. For example, “I haven’t finished writing my report but I’m tired, I think I’m going to call it a day.” We frequently (but not always) use it to talk about tasks that we will resume at a later time. In the example we know that the report wasn’t finished, so although work on that report has stopped, it is implied that the report will be finished at a later date.
